What Is An Expert Witness?

An expert witness is an individual who utilizes specialized experience, knowledge, and skills to provide evidence, opinions, or testimony regarding complex or difficult issues in support of mediation or other judicial proceedings.  An expert witness may be hired by any party to a dispute, and they may be called to testify about relative case details based on their expertise after reviewing and analyzing evidence or discovery.  Although an expert witness is typically hired by one party, the expert witness still maintains a responsibility and obligation to be impartial and to provide objective opinions and testimony.  The benefit of hiring an expert witness in a dispute is that a judge and a jury may give more weight to expert witness opinions or testimony because of their specialized expertise.

Step #2. Preparation of Report

Step #3. Presentation of Findings

After the report has been completed detailing the expert witness's findings and opinions, the expert witness shall prepare to present the report to the applicable parties, and to provide oral testimony if requested in a competent, credible, and compelling manner.
